Give yourself plenty of time to do your packing-don’t leave it all for the weekend before your move. Having to rush leads to mistakes and creates unnecessary stress. Knowing where to start and how much time to budget will get you off to a successful start.
Plan to devote at least two days to each room in your home. In addition to packing, there’s general cleaning to do; some rooms may need more thorough cleaning or repairs.
Packing is not the most exciting project you’ll ever undertake, so start early and space it out to prevent boredom and fatigue. Make your packing time do double duty by clearing out unneeded items as you go. You’ll have less to pack, carry, and unpack.
Empty out and pack your closets first. You can stack packed boxes in them, and then shut the doors to minimize the impact of early packing on your normal household routine.
Pack up all your seasonal items next and, if possible, completely empty one room and use it to store boxes once you run out of closet space.
Getting the kids to give up outgrown toys and clothing can be a challenge. Make a game out of it by making up silly songs or racing to see who fill up a box the fastest. Set a good example by clearing out your unneeded items too.
Once it’s all over with and you’re enjoying life in your new home, you’ll be very glad you took the time to do the hard part the right way. Keep yourself motivated by reminding yourself how pleasant it’s going to be to relax in a clean, clutter-free space, and how satisfied you’ll feel as the result of a job well done.
