Window sash helps in moving and holding the glass of the window in place. A Sash Cord refers to those cords which attached to both sides of a sliding sash in order to make a connection between sash weights and the sliding sash. This connection is required to be made in order to make sure that the window moves easily. Here is a guide on how to change a broken cord on a sash window.
Since the string is boxed within the window casing therefore in order to replace it first take out the surface casing and metal assembly to have access to the spoiled strings and the weights placed within. Removal of one or both screen stops helps in swinging out the inner or lower damaged parts. Pull the strings free that are fit into grooves and lower the weights. Then remove the upper part by removing the parting bead that connects the two parts.
Remove the trim to access the weights or trim off the interior casing on each side of the frame to get to the weights. Pull the weights out of the pockets and disconnect the remaining parts of the rope that are attached to the weights, if there are any.
Once these steps are complete, feed the new string on top off the pulley and into the crevice that holds the weight. This is done by threading the replacement cord through the pulley and down to the weights. Tie a piece of string, 2 foot long to one end of the new cord.
The other end of the thread is attached to a screw. Drop the it at end of the string over the pulley on top of the framing and grab the screw out of the pocket by dropping the new threads behind the frame. Pull the replacement string with additional string through the weight pocket and then cut off the string. Tie the string end around the weight and set it back into the weight pocket.
The other end of the new string is cut near the framing sill. Locate the position of the hole on it. Install the string through the window. This is done by cutting the ends and inserting them through the top of the sash.
Drop the string down until the end of the hole is seen and then pull it from the hole and tie a knot. Cut off the extra pieces and then put it back into the hole. Reinstall the track after fixing the weight hole covers back onto the side frames or jamb and replace the casing and trim using finish nails.
